The global legal services landscape has changed. The lines are blurring between traditional legal practice and other seemingly parallel disciplines or professional areas of expertise like business advisory and consulting, digital transformation, management consulting. In Africa, the rise of digital media platforms has been welcomed, including in the Africa legal services industry.

Lawyers and intended practitioners keep pushing the envelope to see how they can consolidate skill sets and become better groomed for the future of legal services in their careers. Gladly, there are several providers or career centers that carter to the ever expanding need of law students and the growing body of legal service professionals. Africa Legal is a pan-African legal platform. Launched in 2018, Africa Legal aims “to make it easier for African legal professionals to access the latest jobs, news and access digital courses in one place”. Since its inception in 2018 as part of the Africa Professional Services Group, Africa Legal has succeeded in bringing visibility to legal markets in the various countries on the continent. The platform has also provided a variety of courses to users, utilizing digital learning tech, and continues to provide learning materials in collaboration with leading legal studies institutions. Africa Legal also has a large community of registered legal professionals across the continent, thus providing potential employers with a strong candidate pool of lawyers in furtherance of its legal recruitment work and employer profiling.

LawBasket

LawBasket is a Zimbabwean owned legal-tech company founded by Simba Mubvuma in 2018. LawBasket is a legal marketplace targeted at a pan-African audience of lawyers licensed to practice law within the different countries in the continent. LawBasket provides lawyers licensed to practice on the continent with a platform through which they can provide people and businesses with practical legal help.

Legally Engaged (Legally Engaged Career Center) is Nigeria’s foremost legal career center, and the first of its kind in Nigeria. Legally Engaged seeks to tackle the unemployment and unemployability problem in Nigeria among lawyers. In line with this objective, Legally Engaged offers capacity-building services catering to Nigeria’s lawyers. LE’s services cover: Recruitment and Placement; Learning and Development, Mentoring and Career Coaching.

Legally Engaged has a core followership of thousands of young law students from across the country, many of whom has been placed in leading top-tier law firms and legal departments, or have benefitted from its (free) mentorship programs where they are granted access to several of Nigeria’s leading commercial lawyers both within and outside the country so they are exposed to information from these lawyers that will help guide their legal careers.

Legal Pages is in initiative created for law students in Africa, with a bid to revealing opportunities available to them for career growth. The Legal Pages platform also serves as a nexus between law students and law firms, organizations and institutions. On the Legal Pages website, its editors publish updates on available scholarships, internship opportunities with for law students with law firms and companies; debate, moot and mock competitions. On its other platforms, Legal Pages editors organize educative webinars, bringing leading legal practitioners to educate and introduce budding law students to various aspects of law practice.
